    • Congratulations to Professor Cai Zonghan's team for successfully defending their championship in the 11th BioASQ competition's Biomedical Semantic Question Answering task. Congratulations to my team for another outstanding performance! In the 11th BioASQ competition's Biomedical Semantic Question Answering task (Phase B), we successfully defended our Ideal Answers championship, following our victories in 2020, 21, and 22, reaffirming our team's position in biomedical text semantic analysis! In this competition, we faced excellent teams from around the world, including Fudan University, Macquarie University in Australia, Regensburg University in Germany, University of Aveiro in Portugal, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the United States, University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Athens University of Economics and Business in Greece, Korea University of Technology, and Korea University, among others. Each team displayed outstanding capabilities. The task required participating systems to automatically provide appropriate answers based on biomedical questions and relevant paper retrieval segments. Experts in the field evaluated the answers based on factors such as readability, recall, accuracy, and similarity to standard answers. Fortunately, our team once again received the highest ratings in these evaluation categories, confirming not only last year's excellent performance but also our ongoing efforts and improvement. Thanks to everyone who supported and encouraged us, and thanks to every team member for their hard work. We will continue to work hard, innovate, and make more breakthroughs in the field of biomedical semantic question answering! 🎉🏆🥇🍾

  • Congratulations ! ! Our lab's members Yu Zhang, J.K. Lee and Jen-Chieh Han won the first place in "Task3 : Biocreative VII"

    • Professor Cai Zonghan's team won the first place in the BioCreative VII "International Biomedical Literature Automatic Exploration Competition" Professor Cai Zonghan from the Department of Engineering and Engineering, Central University, led laboratory members Zhang Yu, Li Zhonggang, and research assistant Han Renqi to participate in the BioCreative VII held in 2021 In the "International Biomedical Literature Automatic Exploration Competition", won the first place in the project of "Automatic Extraction of Drug Names in Twitter Texts". The competition is the most important international competition for biomedical information extraction. Since 2004, seven competitions have been held, providing reference materials and an evaluation environment for the development of text mining technology. The organizers of this year include the University of Delaware, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, and the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The "Automatic extraction of medication names in tweets" project of this competition is provided by the famous Health Language Processing Lab (Health Language Processing Lab) of the University of Pennsylvania in charge of providing data and evaluation methods, a total of 16 teams participating in this competition, including research teams from Harvard Medical School, Huida Corporation (NVIDIA), Florida State University, Roche Pharmaceutical Company and other institutions. Social media such as Twitter are widely used by the general public, and some of the content is related to health and medical topics, including medication habits, drug side effects, and epidemic diseases. Mining health information from social media content will help understand population health and assist in medical assessment. However, because social media texts are usually colloquial (even using a lot of abbreviations and Internet-specific words), and Twitter has restrictions on the length of text, it is a difficult challenge to identify medical and health-related content through traditional methods. Therefore, the project "Automatically Extract Drug Names from Twitter Texts" expects participating teams to develop a system that can automatically identify whether tweets contain drug names, and accurately mark where the drug names appear in the sentence. The results of this task will help in the follow-up analysis of issues such as drug side effects and drug use status in a large population. Prof. Cai's team applied the most advanced pre-trained language model, combined with the data-centric AI method, and achieved the highest scores in the two most important evaluation indicators (Strict F1 and Overlapping F1) of the project. This score also exceeds the latest method published by the competition organizers last year. The system description paper written by the laboratory team was invited by the conference and presented orally in the early morning of August 9, Taiwan time. The team looks forward to continuing to develop new methods based on the experience of this competition to help solve problems in the field of biomedicine. Competition URL:

    • Successfully defended! Professor Cai Zonghan guided the team to participate in the 9th BioASQ International Artificial Intelligence Biomedical Field Competition and won the first place again! Professor Cai Zonghan instructed the IISR laboratory's biomedical team master student Zhang Yu and research assistant Han Renchi to participate in the 9th BioASQ (BIOASQ large-scale biomedical semantic indexing and question answering competition) in the Biomedical Linguistic Question and Answer Project (Task 9b: Biomedical) Semantic QA) won the first place in Batch 4 and Batch 5 Ideal Answers again! Previously, Professor Cai Zonghan's team also won the first place in the same project in the 8th BioASQ competition. BioASQ is co-sponsored by the "Democritus" Multidisciplinary Research Center in Greece, the Barcelona Supercomputer Center in Spain and other units. sponsor. The task that Professor Cai Zonghan supervised the team involved was to automatically give appropriate answers based on biomedical questions and relevant paper retrieval fragments. Domain experts rated the answers given by each team on four aspects: readability, recall rate, accuracy, and repetition rate with standard answers. Participating teams include related laboratories at Korea University, Macquarie University in Australia, University of California at San Diego, and University of Lisbon in Portugal. The IISR laboratory team's average score in the four areas not only ranks first among all participating teams, but also has a slight improvement compared to last year, indicating that the system improvement has been effective. Scoreboard : http://participants-area.bioasq.org/results/9b/phaseB/

    • This time we have to challenge the transliteration of Chinese words into Korean words. If there is this system, you should tell your Korean friends that the popular drama in Taiwan is called "斯卡羅", and you can use our system to transliterate "斯卡羅" into "스카로". In the field of machine translation, the amount of training materials determines the effectiveness of the translation system to a large extent. In this case, transliteration is even more difficult. Everyone knows that there are many pairs of transliterated words in Chinese to English and Korean to English, but very few Chinese to Korean. Therefore, the effect of directly training the model with Chinese-Korean pairing is not good. then what should we do? Based on this idea, we use English as a bridging language and combine the Chinese-English and English-Korean transliteration word pairing data sets. With the transfer learning method we designed, the translation system can use these two Learn how to transliterate Chinese words into Korean words with matching materials in two languages. We think that after the completion of Transfer Learning, when the translation system encounters a novel Chinese word fragment, the system can figure out which English word fragment is similar to which learned English word fragment, and this English word fragment may also be similar to a learned English word fragment. Korean word fragments, so the possibility of correct transliteration is greatly improved.

The “identification” project won the first place. The participating teams include top teams from Harbin Institute of Technology, Dalian University of Technology, Frankfurt University and Europe.

    • Gene and protein-related research results are extremely important for biomedical personnel. In the previous studies on gene and protein name identification, the main purpose was to identify the gene and protein related words in the biomedical abstract. However, among these large names of genes and proteins, only the names that can be linked to open biomedical databases (for example, EntrezGene or UniProt) are really meaningful information for biomedical researchers. Therefore, the main purpose of the "Gene and Protein Related Object Recognition" project is to identify important gene and protein names from the title and abstract of the patent literature. The research team used a new approach (statistical criteria model), which is a template-based machine learning approach that identifies genes at high recall rates (with the highest recall rate and F-Score across all teams). Protein related objects. The conditional random domain model is used to learn and fine tune the boundaries of the distinguished names based on the corpus provided by the competition. Won the first place in the competition.
